Green Steel Calculator
Calculate steel production or hydrogen demand for green steelmaking (DRI), including electrolyser requirements.
How to Use This Calculator
1. Select Operation: Choose whether you want to calculate steel production from available hydrogen, or hydrogen demand for a target steel output.
2. Enter Values: Fill in the required fields for your scenario. Adjust electrolyser efficiency and capacity as needed.
3. View Results: The calculator will display steel production, hydrogen demand, electrolyser power, energy, and water requirements.
Example Calculation
Operation: Steel Production
H₂ Available: 1,000 kg/d
Electrolyser Efficiency: 70%
Electrolyser Capacity: 95%
Results:
- Steel Production: 18,518.5 kg/d
- Hydrogen Demand: 1,000 kg/d
- Electrolyser Power: 2.47 MW
- Energy Required: 56.2 MWh/day
- Water Required: 9.00 m³/day
Technical Considerations
- The calculator assumes 54 kg H₂ is required per tonne of steel (DRI process, 100% H₂ reduction).
- Does not include additional energy for Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or other steelmaking steps.
- Water demand is based on electrolysis only (9 L per kg H₂).
- Electrolyser power and energy are calculated using 39.44 kWh/kg H₂.
- Real-world values may vary depending on process, feedstock, and plant efficiency.
