Hydrogen-Natural Gas Blending Calculator
Calculate blend properties and safety parameters for hydrogen-natural gas mixtures
How to Use This Calculator
Key Parameters Explained
Flow Rates & Composition
- Natural Gas Flow: Volume flow rate of natural gas
- Hydrogen Input: Choose between flow rate (m³/h) or volume fraction (%)
- Flow Rate Mode: Enter hydrogen flow rate directly
- Volume Blend Mode: Enter desired hydrogen percentage in the blend (e.g., 33.3%)
System Conditions
- Pressure: Operating pressure of the blending system
- Temperature: Operating temperature of the gases
Example Calculations
Flow Rate Mode
Blending 100 m³/h hydrogen with 900 m³/h natural gas:
NG Flow: 900 m³/h
H₂ Flow: 100 m³/h
Result: 10% H₂ | 0.61 kg/m³ | 33.2 MJ/m³
Volume Blend Mode
Blending 33.3% hydrogen with 1000 m³/h natural gas:
NG Flow: 1000 m³/h
H₂ Blend: 33.3%
Result: 499.5 m³/h H₂ | 33.3% H₂ | 0.45 kg/m³
Important Considerations
- Wobbe Index must be within ±5% of natural gas for appliance compatibility
- Maximum hydrogen content is typically limited to 20% by volume
- Higher hydrogen content increases flame speed and flashback risk
- Pipeline materials must be compatible with hydrogen embrittlement
Safety Notes
Monitor flammability limits carefully during blending
Higher hydrogen content increases pressure drop
